The reason why we get stuck sometimes is because we are too focused on other people and what they have. We wonder why one person seems to be excelling and succeeding over us. We wonder why someone we think we are better than is “making it” and we are just stagnant. It was even like that with Jesus with people wondering how an ordinary carpenter’s son could be the messiah. We want to leave people where we found them and think that is the indication of our own progress.
What we don’t realise is that we are focusing on the wrong thing and God can’t use us if we are too filled with bitterness, envy, anger and malice. It is NOT possible!!!! God is a God of love; he is good, gracious and merciful. He is kind and loving EVERYTIME, so it is impossible for him to manifest his glory in the life of someone whose heart is contrary to his nature.
I had to learn this the hard way when I got carried away looking at my mates from secondary school and Uni and how far they seemed to go while my progress seemed slow. I mean I spent 8 months at home looking for a job while my friends’ careers were taking off. It took me a while and God using my boyfriend (and now husband) to knock some sense into me that my journey is not someone else’s journey and instead of me focusing on my journey and moving forward I was stuck staring at someone else’s journey while I remained stagnant.
The analogy I picture is of all of us in our different cars on different journeys. They have given each of us our car keys, maps, petrol, snacks, music and everything we need for us to reach our destinations. Obviously we all have different destinations so we will have different experiences reaching them. It might take some people hours and others years. Some might get flat tyres and others might run out of fuel but we all will still get to our destinations because we have been fully equipped.
What if you NEVER started your own car? What if you got so carried away looking at the next person’s journey and analysing their map and getting jealous or envious because they seem to have a better journey? Who is the loser here? Meanwhile the person is on the move to their destination and you are still in your car analysing their journey. The saddest part is that you have not even begun to move towards your own destination so you have NO idea what amazing prizes await you at the end. Please tell me, how won’t you remain stuck?
It is time for you to shift your focus and empty yourself of all this negativity that is keeping you stuck so you can be the incredibly, amazing success that God created you to be. It is not someone else’s fault that you are not progressing as you should but it is yours because you are choosing to focus on the wrong thing.
Today I want all of us to check ourselves. Let us get honest and ask our selves some seriously uncomfortable questions?
1) Am I where I want or believe I am meant to be?
2) Do I know where I want to be?
3) Why am I not where I am meant to be?
4) Am I genuinely focused on God and his purpose for my life?
5) Or am I focused on the other person and wasting time being jealous and envious of their success?
6) If God came to visit my heart unexpectedly, would I really be happy to show him the state of my heart and would it align with who God is? Would I show it off or try to hide it in shame?
7) What can I change today to actively move forward and live my God given purpose?
8) Who am I and who do I want to be?
The best part of all this is that God is a very gracious, kind and forgiving God who does not judge us by our past actions because his son already paid for our forgiveness. God also has all the answers and the bible says:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” -James 1:5
With God all we have to do is submit to him and ask him to fill our hearts and minds with his wisdom and take away all the negativity that has been holding us back. He is amazing at starting over and he can with us too. Please let us check ourselves and start over if we need to, it is NEVER too late.
